So now that spring is here, where should you put your bulk Pisum sativum seeds? Many gardeners struggle over this question. If you're like most gardeners, I'm sure you've seen them in adverts and on packaging - the huge bags of miniature saplings that look so tempting to plant! But how do you know when to buy? Here's a guide to help you decide!
The best place to buy these seeds (unless you know where your local seed store is!) is on the internet. There are a huge range of sites online offering a wide range of different kinds of seeds. You'll often find a 'by breed' option on some, or even check for the type of flower by hand. It's worth doing a bit of research before hand though, just to make sure you know what you're buying!
My personal favourite, and one of the bulk seeds recommended by my local seed store, are Goldenrod. Goldenrod is a golden colour with silver spots and are easy to grow from a single flower, making them ideal for novice gardeners. Just buy a couple, plant and then fill up! This is another great reason to buy your seeds online - because there's no shipping costs, and you can often get free seeds as well.
If you don't have access to Goldenrod, look for other coloured varieties. A few of the others are lovely too, but all come in at least two colours - so you should be able to make your selection easily. Don't worry if you don't find any local stores selling these - you should still have no problem ordering them online. Most sites offer free worldwide shipping, so you'll save even more!
When ordering bulk Pisum seeds, it's important to order early. This means that you want to be able to pick and choose, and aren't forced into making a choice when you're stressed about the last few plants you've bought. If you order during the sales period, many online seed companies will place an order with your local garden centre to ensure you get your plants by a particular date. And if you do get to choose then they'll usually send them through the post to your door.
Buying bulk Pisum sativum seeds online, rather than going to your local garden centre, also means that you'll be able to take advantage of seasonal sales. There are always different types of spring flowers, and lots of plants available in summer. For example, there's always a good selection of Java Fern and Anemone. These are both extremely popular in spring. However, in summer you'll find a wide variety of daisies, crocuses and hyacinths too. These all look great in summer, so if you've been sitting on your garden variety seeds then now is a great time to start planting!
One of the things people often worry about when they're buying bulk seeds is getting enough. Well, the trick is to have plenty for next year. That's because each plant only produces one tiny flower, which can be very noticeable. If you buy enough of these in a season, you should be able to have several blooms from one plant. That way, you'll still have space left over for another plant or flowers. If you don't have any more space after this, though, just add those extra flowers to your garden this year.
The final reason why buying bulk Pisum sativum seeds is a good idea, is that these flowers grow fast. That's perfect if you want to grow a huge plant! They also bloom in large numbers, so you'll always have enough flowers if you keep an eye on them. Once, a year you can even divide the plants and replant them. That way you'll always have lots of new flowers to add to your garden.
