Endive Seeds - How to Plant Them in Winter
Despite their name, Endive plants actually have a seed in their leaves. The flower buds are actually stem-like with a head containing a single flower bud. Though Endive flowers will grow both in Spring and Fall, a Fall planting is best because freezing increases the bitter taste of the flower and reduces its fragrance. Endive flowers are also very good candidates for container gardening.
One reason that planting Endive flowers in the Fall is beneficial is because it is a perfect growing season for the tiny seeds. In addition, the flower buds do not require a large area to thrive. If you plan to plant Endive seeds indoors, make sure that they receive adequate light from a window in order for them to develop properly. Also, make sure your indoor plants have received the proper nutrition before planting them.
Before you plant your Endive garden, determine whether your soil is frozen or not. Usually, if the soil is frozen, there is no need to till the soil - the seeds will simply germinate in the normal environment of your home. If however, the soil is thawed, then you should drain it thoroughly and prepare it for endive seeds. If the frost is coming in for the short period of time, you should plant your seeds about two months ahead of the frost.
In addition, you should prepare your plants for planting. Remove any dead leaves or twigs, clean the dirt and add compost to improve the soil's fertility. After this, prepare your plants by preparing the bedding material. For flowering endive seeds, you should place the bulbs on their base in your garden beds. If you use grass clippings, this could be a good choice since grass clippings are known to keep pests away from the plant's roots.
If the weather conditions are not promising, you could still try planting seeds indoors. Endive plants can be planted in plastic potting mixes that contain organic materials like borax, kaolin or plant fiber. This will help your plants' roots absorb moisture while protecting them from any harsh elements. However, using kaolin or borax is advisable, as they break down into small particles that could pollute the soil.
If planting outdoors, you could also try growing Endive berries. These berries are very easy to grow, so you don't have to worry about weeds. They can be eaten on their own, or added to a salad or other foods for a quick snack. Keep in mind that planting berries will take some time, but you should know that they will grow more slowly than most other plants. In addition, they won't bloom for a few months, so you have to be patient during this period.
After your planting and preparation are done, you can now plant the seeds. To prepare the soil for the seeds, mix in one part sand to one part perlite. It is important not to use too much sand or the roots will be too compacted. After the mixture is ready, you can now start putting the Endive berries in. You have to carefully dig a hole that is about two to three inches deep, depending on how many plants you are growing.
When the weather becomes cold and windy, it is advisable to move the plants inside. As soon as the weather changes, make sure to transfer the plants outdoors and replant them. The reason why you should do it is because cold temperatures usually kill the seedlings. In addition, the wind can also damage the growth of the seeds. For this reason, you have to move the plants inside when it's cold and let them get warmer before replanting them.
