Fritillaria meleagris - Checkered Lily
Checkered Lilies are dainty woodland flowers that once grew wild in Elizabethan England. They're so scarce today that they're protected, but you can grow them easily from seed in your moist shady garden.
Less than a foot tall, the nodding purple blooms are marked with a faint checkerboard pattern. They look magical in a woodland garden or rockery. They need partial shade and abundant moisture, places ferns like. Zones 4-8
This is a true heirloom. Your plants will re-seed and develop bulbs, eventually spreading into a lovely cluster. Plant them a few inches apart before winter and they'll sprout in spring. Rich soil with good drainage, dappled sun.
