Prunella vulgaris - Self-Heal.

Prunella is a ruffly ground cover with glowing violet flowers. A lush green carpet, it feeds bees, repels deer, and requires very little from humans. It's super easy to grow.

Prunella vulgaris is commonly called Self-heal. It's been cultivated as a medicinal herb for centuries, but makes a spectacular ground cover. It spreads quickly like mint, but is not intrusive, just efficient.

Heal-all loves shady woodlands and sunny pastures. It grows 4" to 12" high, competes well with tall grass or thrives in a mowed lawn. If you want to mow it you can. It's just shorter. It still blooms.

A hardy perennial in zones 5-8, this showy member of the mint family isn't well known, surprising when you consider its toughness and beauty. Maybe it should try a more glamorous name?

Prunella can be direct sown most any time of the year, even directly into lawns. Part shade and moist soil are best. Prepare the ground well. sow seeds 6" apart and barely cover. Seedlings will appear 6 to 8 weeks after planting.
