Salvia mellifera - Black Sage
Black Sage is a fluffy fragrant evergreen shrub native to the California southwest. It actually has white flowers, (sometimes pale blue) that pop against dark green foliage. In the wild it mounds to about 4' tall, but can be trimmed to a compact form in your garden.
Salvia mellifera is tough as nails. It thrives in full sun, but tolarates shade, needs well-drained soil, is extremely drought-tolerant. It grows on hillsides, flatlands, in blazing sun or under shady oaks. A welcome shelter for birds, it's especially popular with hummingbirds, but deer leave it alone. Too fragrant for their tender noses.
This beauty blooms from March to July and smells wonderful year round.
