Wisteria sinensis alba - White Wisteria
Wisteria sinensis is extraordinary. The white form is even more spectacular than the more common lavender variety and seeds are very rare. It's abundant flower clusters can be a foot long, and the individual blossoms open all at once for a breathtaking display. It's extremely fragrant.
If you haven't grown wisteria before, plant it by a sturdy arbor, not against the house. Older plants develop a twisted, woody trunk several inches in diameter, gnarly and picturesque, but they're strong enough to rip your roof off.
Wisteria will grow in full sun or heavy shade in zones 5-10 and isn't fussy about soil or moisture, though it will perform better with even moisture, good drainage, and timely pruning. It's an exquisite bonsai candidate, especially this white one.
Seeds should be nicked and soaked before planting. Germination is slow, but worth the wait.. Relax and enjoy!
