Xeronema callistemon - Poor Knights Lily
Poor Knights Lily is as spectacular as it is rare. Native to tiny islands in New Zealand where no one is permitted, few collectors have even seen it, and it is definitely worth seeing!
This grassy lily has bright red blooms that resemble hairbrushes. It blooms in late spring. Vertical stalks rise from the foliage, then gently bend to display the bright red, bottle-brush like flowers at the tip. It stands 3 feet tall, spreads to 6 feet wide.
Hardy in zones 9-11. Full sun in cool-summer areas to part shade elsewhere. Very well-drained soil.
